‘Don’t do this’: Democrats try to rally support for Trump impeachment
By Alex Hirschfeld — ReporterWASHINGTON, DC–(Marketwired – Jan 19, 2019) – Democrats are trying to turn the tables on Republicans by arguing that they are trying too hard to be obstructionists.
In a memo to House Republicans, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) says she wants the House Judiciary Committee to investigate the matter, and says that any investigations should focus on the “unwarranted interference” by Republicans.
The Democratic leaders’ letter is just the latest in a series of recent efforts by Democrats to try to get Republicans to step up.
Democrats are also trying to rally Republicans to call on the Judiciary Committee Chairman, Republican Trey Gowdy (R-SC), to investigate President Donald Trump.
Republicans have resisted calls for a special prosecutor, claiming the Mueller investigation will go nowhere.
Gowdy has already publicly rejected the idea, saying “the president has said the Russia investigation is ‘far from over.'”
Democrats are seeking a special committee, and Gowdy is one of the only Republicans to publicly back such a move.
Gowdys spokesman Matt Gurney said Thursday, “The Republican leadership has made clear their intent to proceed with no special prosecutor.
The House Judiciary committee is a legitimate investigation of a matter that has been a subject of intense public debate for months.”
Democrats are calling for Gowdy to call Gowdy for a formal investigation of the matter.
Pelosi also released a memo Thursday that says she is “worried that the Republicans’ efforts to delay the Mueller probe will hurt the president and his agenda, not help.
I’m hopeful they will do everything in their power to do just that.”
The Democrats’ letter cites the president’s tweets saying the investigation is “far from done.”
Pelosi said, “As we have repeatedly said, it is clear that the investigation of these events will be an important part of the investigation into President Trump and his activities in office.”
Pelosi says that “the Democrats will not be a party to any obstruction or obstructionist actions that the president takes, including his attacks on the investigation.”
