YouTube: ‘It’s all about money’
In its latest attempt to shake things up, YouTube has decided to pull down some of its adult content, which includes homemade sex video clips.
“It’s about money,” a spokesperson for YouTube told TechCrunch.
“We have to make sure the monetisation of videos is the best possible.
We have to do this to preserve the integrity of the site and make sure we keep the videos relevant to the content that people watch.”
The decision to remove videos was taken after a series of reports by the Advertising Standards Authority of England and Wales (ASA) into videos uploaded by the platform’s partners.
In May, the regulator issued a warning to YouTube after it was notified that a handful of videos were uploaded by partners with the platform.
“In some cases, YouTube may have a business relationship with a third party that we do not endorse, and we will take action to ensure that those videos are removed if we believe they are not appropriate for our community,” it said.
A spokesperson for the ASA told TechDigest that the regulator had no power to force a partner to remove content.
“Our role is to protect consumers, advertisers and brands from abusive and unlawful content,” the spokesperson said.
“YouTube does not have the authority to enforce any law or order.”
